The lyrics were something that I struggled to figure out for while, not only was it hard to understand what he was saying, when you read them the lyrics make almost no sense. Not that it's bad but it is just nowhere near as adventurous as the other songs.Ī fan favourite from what I can tell with those really distorted vocals in the verses and the slimy delivery during the chorus. Not much to say about this song it's in my opinion easily the weakest song on this album. This song is about an old explorer or pirate telling a young man about all the things he has seen showing all the wacky and nautical things he's seen, like a sponge who lives in a pineapple and works at a fast food restaurant. Gene Ween was using these different voices and impressions to portray different characters since none of the songs here are really connected in much of a way, something that young me couldn't wrap my head around since I thought a concept album has to tell an interconnected story. But something that I always loved is the voices being used. The songs here are each clearly focused on the ocean, pirates, sea creatures, y'know classic Spongebob stuff. I mostly just wanted to use this as a way to talk about this album's world-building and concept. Really this is just a fantastic song and one of the best on this albumįun Fact: Dean Ween says that this is the best song of their careerĪnother great song but it isn't really a song I feel the need to go too deep into it. And boy when this album explodes with those horns, I'm straight up floating. It's definitely the song that represents this album's sound the most. Opening up with a very ethereal instrumental, that sets up the ocean feel. The title track to this album is one of the more classic songs on here. Well your listening to Ween bitch, get strapped in. The song's job is just to set the mood for the rest of the album, it isn't really meant to be heard outside of the album and it also follows a trend with Ween and that is 'weird album openers', for example, them opening-up the intimate and peaceful Quebec with the heavy and aggressive 'Its Gonna Be A Long Night', making you confused at what you're listening to. You should see the confusion on my face, but after a while, I got into it. And then you are met with a minute-long nursery rhyme (which I have just today found out was a cover of "Are My Ears Straight" by Gayly Peevey). Imagine being a little old me listening to what you heard was a classic rock album, with the only song you heard being Ocean Man, you'd think most of the songs would be in the same vain. Wording my thoughts on a computer or on paper is hard for me and I hope people get the most out of this review I might have used the wrong words in a couple of sentences. Im, not the best typer and Grammarly isn't perfect. WARNING: There is probably a bunch of spelling and punctuation mistakes but I do not care enough to look for them. music like Radiohead and The Velvet Underground, otherwise i would just be listening to rap all day What makes this album so important to me is its creativity and experimentation something that wasn't really something I heard in music, like, I didn't even know music could sound like this it lead to me listening to more alt. This new review will be an in-depth, track-by-track review on this album. I've written 2 reviews on this album the first one being a 0 effort, lazy review when I didn't care about reviewing music, the second had more effort put into it but it wasn't much about the music itself as it was about how much this album meant to me.
